Augmented Reality (AR) overlays digital imagery on real-world views via devices like smartphones, allowing for interaction with real surroundings. Extended Reality (XR) is a comprehensive term that encompasses both VR and AR.

Zhang is affiliated with institutions including Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, contributing to digital innovation in healthcare. His Brigham Digital Innovation Hub focuses on developing digital solutions, advising staff on innovation projects, and exploring emerging technologies like XR to enhance healthcare delivery.

AMXRA aims to advance MXR science and practice, integrating members from various fields such as medicine, psychology, and technology. Established as a nonprofit in 2022, AMXRA organizes events, supports adoption of XR technologies, and promotes cross-disciplinary collaboration. With over 270 members, it acts as a professional community for MXR, providing training and leadership opportunities. AMXRA has initiated efforts to educate public and professional groups on MXR and is collaborating with organizations like the FDA to establish standards.

The association is also fostering scientific research in MXR, launching the Journal of Medical Extended Reality in partnership with Mary Ann Liebert. This journal will serve as the first peer-reviewed platform dedicated to MXR, with submissions commencing in Fall 2023. Through these initiatives, AMXRA seeks to be a pivotal force in shaping the future of medical extended reality.
