Video Summary
The AOIA Digital Health Innovation webinar addressed the integration of digital lifestyle medicine, nutrition, and osteopathic principles to transform chronic disease care. Dr. Heidi Prather highlighted the role of lifestyle medicine’s six pillars—nutrition, physical activity, stress management, social connections, restful sleep, and avoiding risky substances—in preventing and reversing chronic conditions linked to systemic inflammation. She emphasized the impact of diet on musculoskeletal health, presenting her group's successful programs for musculoskeletal patients that offer multidisciplinary, behavioral change-focused interventions via group and individualized care.

Registered Dietitian Nartana Mehta discussed employing group telehealth visits and digital tools to deliver scalable, patient-centered nutritional care. She underscored whole-food, plant-predominant diets tailored to individual needs and the importance of behavioral counseling techniques like motivational interviewing and self-monitoring to support sustainable dietary changes. Mehta highlighted the role of technology, such as apps and wearables, in remote monitoring and increasing access, especially for underserved populations, emphasizing privacy, consent, and inclusivity in telehealth delivery.

Dr. Colin Zhu shared insights on leveraging digital health tools, including podcasts, wearables, telehealth, and AI, to extend lifestyle medicine’s reach. He framed digital health as a complement to traditional care, enabling personalized, preventive, and participatory models that engage diverse learning styles and address chronic disease burdens in aging populations. He also noted challenges like health disparities and ethical considerations in digital adoption.

Panelists addressed concerns over telehealth reimbursement policies impacting access, underscoring program adaptability and advocacy. They discussed patient readiness assessment using models like the transtheoretical model to personalize interventions. Overall, the webinar highlighted digital lifestyle medicine as a scalable, evidence-based approach enhancing chronic disease management through multidisciplinary, technology-enabled, and patient-centered strategies rooted in osteopathic care.
