Advocacy in Medicine: Transitioning to Residency and Beyond
Description
This session will empower medical students to integrate their advocacy efforts into both the residency application process and their future careers as physicians. The speakers will provide practical strategies and personal insights to help attendees translate their advocacy work into a compelling narrative that highlights their dedication to making a difference in healthcare. OMS IV students Amber Shirley and Syed Rizvi will share how they leveraged their advocacy experiences to strengthen key sections of their residency applications, including their personal statements, experiences, publications, and other various aspects. They will also discuss how they tactfully incorporated their advocacy achievements into interview discussions, showcasing their commitment to this work and addressing their long-term goals with residency programs. Moving into advocacy beyond medical school, PGY-2 resident Brie Howerton will share her firsthand experiences of transitioning her advocacy efforts from medical school into her residency, offering guidance on sustaining this passion in the demanding environment of postgraduate training. This session aims to equip attendees with actionable advice and the confidence to highlight advocacy work as a defining aspect of their journey into and through residency.

Amber Shirley Headshot
Amber K. Shirley, OMS IV

Amber K. Shirley is a fourth-year medical student at Lincoln Memorial University DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine who has recently matched into residency. Being raised in a rural and underserved community, she developed a passion for healthcare policy and advocacy, which she has channeled and acted upon during her medical school career. Notably, she has served two terms as the public relations director for Omega Beta Iota honor
society and currently serves as the American Medical Association Medical Student Section Region 4 Chair, in which role she oversees AMA student chapters at medical schools in the southeast. Previously, she served as a delegate on behalf of the AMA's Medical Student Section to the AMA House of Delegates and has been heavily involved with the Tennessee Medical Association and the National Park Service.


Syed Rizvi Headshot
Syed A. Rizvi, OMS IV

Syed A. Rizvi is a medical student at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine with over five years of experience in health management, community advocacy, and policy-related sectors. Through his roles in various organizations, he has spearheaded initiatives and policy changes that have led to positive outcomes at regional and global levels, ensuring underrepresented voices are heard and have a seat at the decision-making table. In addition to his political work, he is passionate about delivering compassionate medical care and is actively involved in clinical research and hospital management in the metropolitan Detroit area. With a strong background in both advocacy and healthcare, he has honed his skills in institutional/governmental representation and patient-centered care and is dedicated to staying up-to-date with the latest trends in both fields. He is committed to making a positive impact by giving back to the communities that have contributed to his success.
