Advocacy in a Clinical Environment
Description

This session highlights the importance of advocacy work in clinical and educational environments. Emphasizing the importance of collaboration across disciplines, the presentation will also discuss how healthcare professionals can work within their communities and with policy makers to drive change. We will share our experiences at DO Day, our state legislation, and driving change through our state Osteopathic Association.

Douglas W. Harley, DO, FACOFP, FAAFP

Douglas W. Harley, DO, FACOFP, FAAFP, is a Family Medicine physician in Akron, Ohio. He is the current president of the Ohio Osteopathic Association, past president of the Ohio ACOFP, and the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians. He has academic appointments at multiple local medical schools as part of his medical student and resident teaching, including Clinical Professorship at OUHCOM and Professorship at the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). Dr. Harley enjoys education and advocacy on a local, state, national, and international level.


Jennifer Gwilym Headshot
Jennifer L. Gwilym, DO, FACOFP, FAAFP, CS

Jennifer L. Gwilym, DO, FACOFP, FAAFP, CS, is a highly accomplished osteopathic family medicine physician with an extensive background in medical education and leadership. She received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) and is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP). Dr. Gwilym currently practices clinical medicine in a dermatology clinic and serves as a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at OU-HCOM, where she holds several leadership positions, including Chair of the Department of Primary Care and Student Selection Committee. She has an impressive history of involvement in professional organizations, such as the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP), and the Ohio Osteopathic Association (OOA), including serving as Past President of both the OOA and Ohio ACOFP. Dr. Gwilym's dedication to the osteopathic profession is further demonstrated by her participation in various leadership and fellowship programs, as well as her numerous awards and recognition for her contributions to medicine and education.
