OVERVIEW
This program provides an introductory, evidence-based overview of the clinician’s role in suicide prevention among adult patients (ages 18 and older). The program addresses the scope of suicide as a public health issue and emphasizes the critical role healthcare professionals play in identifying patients at risk, initiating supportive interventions, and connecting individuals to appropriate treatment and resources. Content includes an overview of suicide risk and protective factors, common warning signs, evidence-based screening tools, brief clinical interventions, collaborative safety planning, and treatment options for patients at risk of suicide.

This activity is designed for clinicians authorized to prescribe medication, as well as clinicians in training, including physician residents, physician assistant students, and nurse practitioner students.

Describe a model for understanding the risk and protective factors of suicide
Enumerate the warning signs of suicide risk
Identify at least two evidence-based screening tools for assessing suicidal risk
List the key components of a patient-driven, collaborative safety plan
