OVERVIEW
This course includes a survey of topics relevant to physiatrists and pain specialists, with emphasis on workers’ compensation, wound care, and pelvic joint dysfunction.

OBJECTIVES
  • Define pain, outline approaches to pain management, and discuss pain as it relates to amputees
  • Review the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, explain where emotional and physical pain intersect, and describe how to connect with and support patients with complicated psychological and physical pain
  • Discuss knee, hip, and shoulder radiofrequency ablation applications and outcomes
  • Discuss indications for peripheral nerve stimulation, review literature to support its use, and explain when to refer patients for consult
  • Review spinal cord stimulation therapy and waveforms and discuss dorsal root ganglion stimulation
  • Evaluate and manage hemiplegic shoulder pain
  • Discuss Workers' Compensation and outline challenges
  • Identify key concepts of clinical decision making for medically complex patients, discern medical barriers for optimal intensive inpatient rehabilitation, and differentiate possible contributing psychological and social factors
  • Review concussion, anatomic and physiologic changes after mTBI, blood flow dysregulation, and concussion management
  • Discuss PM&R aspects of wound care and the "ABCs" of chronic wound care
  • Identify candidates for intrathecal baclofen (ITB) pump system, review the function of an ITB system and its complications
  • Outline the history of cannabis, discuss the differences between THC and CBD, list different types of cannabis, describe patient assessment and monitoring as part of a medical cannabis program, and discuss the future of medical cannabis
  • Define Long COVID and review diagnostic criteria, discuss the updated mechanisms and symptoms of Long COVID, outline possible treatment strategies, and review the updated research
  • Review the anatomy of the ulnar nerve, explain how ulnar neuropathy at the elbow is currently diagnosed and how ultrasound can help, and review current gaps in the research
  • Review Thread Carpal Tunnel Release (TCTR)'s background and the technique's progression, discuss return-to-work with TCTR, and discuss where to obtain training to offer TCTR to patients
  • Review the anatomy and physiology of pelvic joint dysfunction, outline treatment approaches, and discuss pearls and pitfalls
  • Assess the pelvis for somatic dysfunction, treat somatic dysfunction, and outline relative and absolute contraindications to treatment with OMT
